Get inspired by the fantastic local history of activism, community spirit and solidarity in the area. For this one we have an arts worker to keep wee hands busy making stuff while grown ups watch the two short films.

Keep it Up ( 20mins, 2001) The story of the Black Community Development Project and their wide-ranging work
Interval: with performance from our own ‘Youth Arts Collective’
Never Give Up (14 mins, 2011)
Voices and tales of activism in the area – with plenty of familiar faces and an amazing amount of creativity
6:15pm: Creative actions: making banners, posters, costumes and performance pieces – Light hearted, intergenerational, positive, building solidarity.

This is a free event, curated by the NEA Film Group with Project Esperanza for Local Cinema Network’s programme “LOCAL RESISTANCE”, which includes events in Wester Hailes, Craigmillar and Leith, September – December 2025
NB: these events are part of Art For Grown Ups’ wider, Creative Resistance Project in collaboration with National Galleries of Scotland and Royston Wardieburn Arts & Culture Group. Look out for our exhibition at the Portrait Gallery in November, our social history display in the NEA Café and a celebration event for families on 6th December.
