I am Not My Hair

Four Black women stand close together against a dark teal background, posed in a group portrait with confident expressions. The woman on the left wears a pink headband, a bright blue and purple retro windbreaker and denim. Next to her, a woman with long braids and a colourful patterned headwrap tilts her head onto the shoulder of the woman beside her, wearing a white vest over a dark top. The third woman wears round glasses, a red headband and a bold black, white and pink zigzag knitted vest. On the right, a woman with her hair in bantu knots wears a brown checkerboard sweater vest over a collared shirt and tie.

I AM NOT MY HAIR

By Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda

I Am Not My Hair is a joyful dance-theatre work created for Black and Mixed-Race girls aged 8-12 years old. Drawing on lived experiences, and through vibrant movement, music and storytelling, the piece celebrates Black hair and creates a space where identity and individuality are honoured.
