The film follows newspaper editor Walter Burns, who tries to win back his ex-wife and star reporter, Hildy Johnson, just as she’s about to remarry and leave journalism. Walter schemes to keep Hildy around by involving her in one last big story — the case of an accused murderer. As the pair chase the scoop, old sparks fly, leading to comedic chaos in the newsroom and courtroom.
