Alzheimer’s Month – September
September has been the World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to come together, raise awareness, and support those living with dementia. Here at North Edinburgh Arts (NEA), we’ve been inviting local people living with dementia, along with their families and carers, to take part in our regular dementia-friendly activities. Our dementia-friendly programme offers a chance to relax, be creative, and connect with others in a safe and friendly space close to home in Muirhouse.
Monthly Dementia-Friendly Film Club
Supported by Muirhouse Housing Association
We have launched a dementia-friendly film club at NEA. These screenings are designed to create a warm and welcoming environment where people with dementia, their carers, and family members can enjoy a film together and connect with others.
To help everyone feel comfortable, we make some small but important adjustments:
-
Lights will be dimmed but not fully dark to reduce anxiety.
-
The cinema won’t be filled to capacity to avoid large crowds.
-
There will be a short interval with light refreshments.

“Everyone likes a trip to the cinema. So we were delighted to link up with North Edinburgh Arts Centre to deliver this dementia-friendly screening in what is a first from Muirhouse. Dementia-friendly screenings are now expected to take place every month. We are thrilled to be supporting such an innovative way to engage members of the community. Apart from these dementia-friendly screenings, the advent of a cinema in our community, when previously the nearest one is 3.5 miles away, is to be greatly welcomed.” – Susan Bell, Chief Executive of Muirhouse Housing Association
Sunshine Social Club
Supported by Meeting Centres Scotland
Every Monday, 10.30am – 12.30pm, we host a dementia-friendly social club for people in the early stages of dementia, those newly diagnosed, or awaiting a diagnosis. Each session includes a variety of activities followed by lunch.
-
First session is free
-
After that, we suggest a £5 donation (carers come free).
For more information or to register, please call 07493 876130 or email admin@northedinburgharts.co.uk.
Building a More Inclusive Community
At NEA, we believe that creativity, connection, and care should be accessible and available to everyone. Our dementia-friendly activities are an important step in making sure that people living with dementia, and those who support them, feel welcomed and included in our community.
“Collaboration is at the heart of what we do at NEA. By working in partnership with local people, and local groups and organisations, we’re able to create welcoming activities that truly support our community and make a positive difference to people’s lives. We are grateful to Muirhouse Housing Association and Meetings Centres Scotland for their support with getting our dementia-friendly programme off the ground.” – Kate Wimpress, NEA Director
We look forward to seeing you at a film screening or social club soon!
