Summer 2022

We’re running a special programme of weekly creative activities and events for local children, young people, families and adults. All activities are held at West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre (unless stated otherwise) and are free and drop-in. No advance booking is required. Just turn up on the day!

Weekly programme from 5 July:

Garden Chill for Families (All Ages)

When: Wednesdays 6 July – 27 July, 1.30pm – 3.30pm 
Where: North Edinburgh Arts Garden 

Who: Families

Every Wednesday afternoon at the NEA garden, we’re running our  Garden Chill for local families. Join us to explore our NEA Community Garden and get involved in gardening, nature conservation and creative activities.

Friday Arts & Nature (Ages 8+)

When: Fridays 8 July – 29 July, 1.30pm – 3.30pm 
Where: North Edinburgh Arts Garden 

Who: Ages 8+ (under 7s with parent/carer)

Every Friday afternoon at the NEA garden, we’re running our Friday Arts and Nature sessions for local young people.
These will include gardening, nature conservation and creative activities designed to get young people engaged and interested in the world around them, particularly in the environment on their local doorstep. A healthy snack will be provided.

Summer Open Studio (Ages 16+, Self-directed / Untutored) 

When: Tuesdays 5 July to 9 August, 10am – 2pm 
Where: West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre

Who: Ages 16+

Open Studio is a weekly space for any local adults who want a place to focus on their own creative interests. Whether you are a stitcher, a maker or sketcher, come along for some untutored time and space to make and create with other locals. We’ll provide tea and coffee making provisions and some basic materials, you bring anything else you need. Available for a maximum of 10 adults, on a drop in and first come basis. No booking required.  

Weekly creative programme from 11 July:

Animation Studio (Ages 8-14) 

Mondays, 10am – 12pm, weekly 

Dates:  11th, 18th, 25th July and 1st and 8th August 

Back by popular demand! Working with artist and animator, Rachael Hunter, you will create 2D and 3D animations and moving images. Learn about different stop motion animation techniques, including pixelation, claymation and cut out, to help your drawings, sculptures and collages come to life! For children ages 8-14. 

Arts and Crafts (Ages 5-14) 

Tuesdays, 10am – 12pm, weekly 

Dates: 19th, 26th July and 2nd, 9th August  (Please note sessions start on 19th July; the session on 12th July has been cancelled.)

Get crafty and creative! We’ll be making all sorts of things, from storybooks, paper creations and 3D crafts, to printing and painting. Our summer arts and craft workshops use materials that can often be found at home, offering simple ideas and skills that can be replicated and shared with friends and family. 

Drama Club (Ages 5-12) 

Wednesdays, 10am – 12pm, weekly 

Dates: 13th, 20th, 27th July and 3rd, 10th August 

Join Harriet for Drama Club on Wednesday mornings this summer! Children will take part in fun games and imaginative play, giving them a chance to be creative, try new things and build confidence. 

Summer Arts and Circus Skills (Ages 5-14) 

Thursdays, 10am – 12pm, weekly 

Dates: 14th, 21st July and 4th, 11th August (off 28th July) 

Every Thursday, join our artists for a morning of movement, play and creativity! The Summer Arts and Circus Skills programme allows children to participate in a relaxed yet structured environment, Alternating between circus skills and art-making throughout the morning. The classes are split into two age groups, 5-7 years and 8-14 years. The art classes will be different each week including graffiti art and mural painting to paper costumes and sculptures. Children will also discover the joys of Circus Skills! With a mix of games, exercises, movement and play, you will learn new skills, get creative and have lots of fun. There will be a mix of spinning plates, balancing feathers, juggling balls, clowning games, dance exercises and more. 

Music Studio (Ages 8-14) 

Fridays, 10am – 12pm, weekly 

Dates: 15th, 22nd, 29th July and 5th, 12th August 

A drop-in music club for young people ages 8-14 looking to have fun, make music and learn a bit more about songwriting and creating music with support from experienced musicians and tutors. The workshops will allow young people to work alongside local musicians, tutors and industry professionals to make their first ever songs. More details coming soon.

Art for Grown Ups Summer Project


Special Art for Grown-Ups workshops

Wednesday 10 August and Thursday 11 August (11am – 4pm)

at Screen Education Edinburgh

Bob Winton and Alice Betts will lead two days of workshops at Screen Education Edinburgh.

Working with video and photography created during the Art for Grown Ups Summer Project – we’ll create a sequence of short films to screen at Filmhouse on 27 August. Processes will include editing, animating, sound recording and creating titles. You can participate without having attended our summer project sessions.

  • Suitable for adults and young people over 9 years old.
  • Lunch will be provided
  • You can book one or two days of workshops (please choose when registering)
  • Free but registration is required (limited places)
